Hamilton New Zealand LDS Temple

The Hamilton, New Zealand Temple sits at the top of a hill on an 86 acre lot that includes a now closed college campus. At the bottom of the hill is a popular visitors center and beautiful gardens that are lite up during Christmas time. It was the first temple built in the Southern Hemisphere, and is a sister building to the Bern Switzerland Temple. It and the college campus were both built entirely by volunteer missionary labor. This temple and only two other have full Celestial Room murals: the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple and the Los Angeles California Temple.

There was a time when overnight endowment sessions were offered Friday through Saturday to accommodate many members who traveled to the temple over the weekend. It was also closed for two months in 1993 to replace wall coverings and furnishings, then again in 1994, for 9 months, to carry out a more extensive renovation that included installation of air conditioning and removal of asbestos.
